Simultaneously Treat Cataracts & Astigmatism with a Toric IOL

Patients who undergo cataract surgery can choose from a range of intraocular lenses (IOLs). For those with astigmatism, a toric lens will typically provide the very best result. These premium IOLs feature a variety of refractive powers in different locations on the lens, which can effectively correct the effects of astigmatism. After surgery, many patients enjoy a significantly reduced dependency of their regular eyewear. The team at Seaside Ophthalmology, Inc., provides individualized treatment to patients throughout the Brunswick, GA, area. Our reputation for excellence has allowed us to participate in testing for premium lens types. This means we are also one of the first practices in the region to offer more advanced treatment options as they become available.

Astigmatism Explained

Astigmatism is a common refractive error that occurs when the cornea, or front surface of the eye, is irregularly shaped. This causes light to bend unevenly, blurring your vision. For most patients, this affects their eyesight at all distances.

Astigmatism affects how the surface of the eye refracts light, causing blurring.

Why Choose a Toric IOL?

While cataracts and astigmatism are not interrelated, your doctor can treat both conditions at once by implanting a toric lens in the eye during surgery. Toric lenses are specifically used for cataract patients who also suffer from moderate to severe astigmatism, and allow light entering the front of the eye to be focused in the proper location on the retina.

While a toric lens may not completely alleviate your need for corrective eyewear, you should see a significantly reduced dependency.

Without a toric IOL, patients would still need to heavily depend on their glasses or contact lenses to achieve clear vision. While this type of lens may not completely alleviate your need for corrective eyewear, you should see a significantly reduced dependency.

Customizing Your Treatment

In order to evaluate your candidacy for a toric lens, one of our doctors will first need to take exact measurements of the surface of the eye. Like all our premium lenses, we will take two measurements in order to gather the most accurate information. This will allow the surgeon to more precisely place the lens within the eye.

We offer two premium toric IOLs:

  • Monofocal Toric Lens: Monofocal lenses provide clearer vision at only one distance, either near or far.
  • TECNIS Symfony® Toric Lens: This type of multifocal lens can provide improved distance vision as well as treat presbyopia, or farsightedness. This allows patients to see objects clearly at any distance.

Your toric IOL will be implanted during cataract surgery in order to replace the eye’s natural lens.

Financing is Available

In most cases, premium intraocular lenses like our toric options are not covered by insurance. However, you can still enjoy this advanced solution on nearly any budget through financing. Our team can help patients maximize their insurance coverage, as well as apply for flexible financing through CareCredit®.
